Energy Plaza
1601 Bryan - 1983
This skyscraper was originally constructed for the Atlantic Richfield
Company as their regional headquarters. When the building opened, it
was known as the ARCO Tower. I.M. Pei & Partners designed this
49 story building located on the north side of Thanksgiving Square.
The building in plan is a set of three 30-60 degree triangles. Each
stop at a different level. The first one is 6 stories tall, forming
part of the base of the building. The main shaft of the building
utilizes two of the triangles, making the floor plate from the 7th to the
43rd floor an equilateral triangle. The final 30-60 degree triangle
is the tallest at 49 stories. On top of the tower is a triangular
communications tower that is modeled after the Eiffel Tower -- only
smaller and three sided. The principal tenant of the building is TXU,
an energy services company, and late in the summer of 1999, their
logo and the letters "TXU" were installed on all sides the
tower. Energy Plaza is the 9th tallest building in Dallas and with a
height of 629 feet. |
