Stone Place Tower
(formerly The Praetorian Building)
1607 Main - 1909; remodeled 1960's
The Praetorian Building was Dallas' first true skyscraper. It was
15 stories and the tallest building in the city and featured an ornate
facade with a terra cotta cornice. In the 1960's, the facade was
removed from the building and a porcelain enamel facade was installed in
order to modernize the skyscraper. At this time the size of the
building was doubled, placing an addition, also clad with the same panels,
to the east of the original landmark. During the decade of the
1990's the building was remodeled by Corgan Associates, Architects and the
name was changed to Stone Place Tower. No attempt was made to
restore the building's exterior.
