SoCo Urban Lofts
formerly Santa Fe Lofts
1122 Jackson St. - 1926 (NR, D)
In 1926, the Santa Fe Railway constructed a series of four buildings that
were connected by underground railroad tunnels built to centralize the
railroad's transfer and warehouse operations. While allowing the transfer
operations to remain in the heart of the city, the underground tunnels
removed the surface tracks that plagued downtown traffic. This
building was one of the warehouses and was located across Jackson Street
from the main office building. It served as the complex's Garment
Center. The University Club was located in the penthouse and it was
used by the Dallas elite to wine and dine. After the University Club closed,
WFAA Radio used the penthouse for their studios. Today, the old sign on top
of the building has been restored. The warehouse matches the
Santa Fe Building with buff brick and cast
stone trim. The warehouse was one of the first buildings in downtown Dallas
to be renovated into loft apartments and in 2004, the building became
condominiums. |
