Union Tower Complex

1509 Pacific

Fidelity Union Life Building - 1949
Fidelity Union Tower - 1959

This complex of two adjoining skyscrapers was originally constructed for the Fidelity Union Life Insurance Company at the intersection of Bryan and Pacific, where the two street grids of Downtown Dallas come together.  The first building constructed was the 21 story Fidelity Union Life Building.  It opened in 1949 and was probably one of the first tall buildings constructed that was oriented toward the 45 degree street grid.  Ten years later, the company had grown so much that the 33 story Mayflower Building was constructed immediately to the west.  It was later renamed the Fidelity Union Tower.  However, this tower is oriented to the original City of Dallas street grid and the 45 degree grid.  Unlike the Republic Center and the Mercantile National Bank Complex, these two buildings read on the skyline as one unit, or to the discriminating eye as an original building with one major addition that tie directly together.  Both buildings were designed by Wyatt C. Hedrick.  It was recently announced that this building will be converted into residential units.  The name of the new project will be Mosaic.  The Fidelity Union Life Building is 268 feet high and ranks 53nd in the city.  The Fidelity Union Tower is 400 feet high and ranks as the 29th tallest in the city.
